About this site |
This Web Based Plant Database System began life as an Honours year project by a student named Alec Woolford from the University of Liverpool in October 1999.
The project came about when Ness Gardens approached the Department of Computer Science with problems in their current system. After an initial analysis of the system, it was clear to see that their system was extremely inefficient containing over 12,000 highly fragmented records, taking upwards of fifteen minutes to update entries in the database. It was therefore the decision of the Department of Computer Science to propose the development of the new system as an Honours year project. It was therfore carried out as a computer science project in co-operation with the Work Based Learning scheme.
The project was carried out over a seven month period, in which the research, design, implementation and testing took place. The limited development time meant that it was not possible to implement all of the required features. Phil Jimmieson from the University of Liverpool, a supervisor of the original project would continue working on the project along with Alec Woolford.
